To suffer with Jesus flows from a profound experience of God’s love for each of us personally. We come to experience the words of St Paul,
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. —Gal 2:20.
“Suffering with” is rooted in a passionate love relationship with Christ. That is why Jesus teaches us that the purest love on earth must be united to suffering. God is love, and Jesus lives His pure love on earth immersed in suffering. Because He loves us, He lives suffering in expiation for our sins. The love of God the Father is pure love, so He gives us His only-begotten Son to be sacrificed as the pure Victim so that we may be restored and have new life in Him. Therefore, the work of the Holy Spirit is to ignite our hearts with the desire to suffer with Jesus for the sole purpose of bringing us to enter Love. Jesus Christ teaches us that suffering united to His Cross is new life through participation in the work of redemption. Finally, as we enter and live participating in the work of redemption, we enter the life in the Trinity, and this is happiness and the fulfillment of our deepest desires.
